Tayoudon: The Secret of Authentic Japanese Dining


Tayoudon is a type of a bowl that is frequently used in a Japanese household.

In terms of frequency, it is the third most used bowl,

After rice bowls and miso soup bowls.

You can use it for rice dish like katsudon, tendon, oyakodon,

Or you can use it for noodles like udon, soba and ramen.

1. Tayoudon bowls keep the soup warm compared to other bowls

This is because this type of bowl is deep and has a relatively smaller rim.

This shape makes it easy to drink soup directly from the bowl.

2. Tayoudon bowl is Mewtwo

I want to call a tayoudon bowl Mewtwo if it were a Pokemon character.

Because it has compatibility with so many kinds of food.

And does a pretty good job.

3. This bowl is useful right?

When I lived with my parents, we had nice tayoudon bowls in the cupboard.

We used them for ramen, soba, udon, and katsudon.

They had nice arabesque patterns on the rims... 

4. Tayoudon literally translates into “multi-purpose” bowl

“Ta” means multi or many,

“You” means purpose, and…

“Don” means a bowl.

6. Ramen shops that use tayoudon are relatively new

Tayoudon bowls are most commonly used in new ramen restaurants that were opened after 2000.

Typically, these restaurants are expensive and creative,

Straying away from your traditional ramen menu items like shoyu ramen, miso ramen, etc.

7. Popular diameter of tayoudon bowls is 6 to 7 inches(15 to 17.5 cm)

The height is 2.8 to 3.5 inches (7 cm to 9 cm), and the capacity is 20 to 43oz (600 to 1000 ml),

Usually it is made of ceramic, so  the weight is around 10 to 20oz (300 g to 600 g).

Pick a larger size if you want to use it for noodle dishes.

Because it needs to hold soup.

Due to Covid, a lot of good ramen restaurants have closed

It makes me feel very angry.

I used to eat ramen out frequently,

But in this situation, 

Ramen shops have started to shorten the hours, limit the number of customers, or even closed their shops.

It has affected the industry so much.

I am afraid good ramen will be gone

In truth, Sapporo Ichiban delivers a good quality shio ramen experience.

Actually, it is very difficult to find good shio ramen.

Do you know why?

Because it is very difficult to make it since it is very simple.

There are many good shoyu and miso flavored instant noodles out there.

But I feel specifically, the shio flavor market is monopolized by Sapporo Ichiban.

Think about this for a moment having good shio ramen for your dinner with your favorite ramen toppings.

Now, you want some, don’t you?

2. Nissin Raoh Shoyu Flavor

MY THOUGHTS OVERALL ★★★★★

It is nearly impossible to make restaurant quality noodles at home without the right tools and equipment.

How can you beat that?

Using Raoh’s shoyu flavour will help you achieve this easily. This is top-notch ramen hands down!

One pinnacle of instant noodles is the soy sauce flavor. It is expensive compared to regular ones but let me tell you, it deserves every single penny.

In a nutshell, I loved every bit of it.

...And I am sure you will too.
